Greenfield

A project or market with no existing constraints or legacy to work around, a blank slate you can build on from scratch. The opposite is brownfield, building amid what already exists.

Why it matters

Greenfield opportunities let you design without baggage, which is freeing but also means no established demand or infrastructure to lean on. Knowing whether you are in greenfield or brownfield territory shapes how you build and what you can assume.

For example

A team building for a brand-new market has a greenfield: no legacy systems to work around, but also no existing demand to lean on.
