How do the best teams learn from churn instead of just reporting it?

They interview the customers who left, properly, with a script that goes past the first answer. 'Too expensive' is almost never the reason, it is the polite version of 'we never got the value we expected'. A good churn interview walks back through the original purchase, the implementation, who was involved, and where the relationship actually broke. Then they classify each departure as avoidable or not, and only chase the avoidable ones. The output is not a churn report, it is a short list of product and process changes with an owner, reviewed the same way a roadmap is.

  • Customer success is a proactive consulting role (adoption, QBRs, needs); support is reactive ticket work.
  • Tag every exit as avoidable (low adoption) or unavoidable (wrong ICP, business shut down) before you act on it.
  • Track onboarding turnaround time and percent of customers onboarded as leading indicators.
