Are pitch competitions worth my time, and how do I win one?

A starting point

A few are genuinely worth it, the ones that come with real prize money, credible judges who become mentors or investors, and press that opens doors, but most are theatre that cost you a weekend for a trophy. To win, treat it like a sales pitch not a science fair: open with the problem and the 'why now', show traction or a crisp demo, know your numbers cold, and rehearse the Q&A more than the deck. Chase the competition for the room it puts you in, not the certificate.

How to Apply and Succeed at Y Combinator

From YC Startup Library by Dalton Caldwell Long-form essay / talk

  • In interviews, winning founders show mastery of their own business, they can explain what they're building and know their own numbers cold.
  • Filling out the application is valuable in itself: it forces you to confront differentiation, competitors and why-now.
  • Avoid 'tar pit' ideas, the well-worn concepts (e.g. music discovery) that tens of thousands of founders have already attempted.
  • Be concrete and specific; vague, buzzword-filled applications get filtered out fast.

Especially useful for students, women founders and impact-driven builders.
