Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship
Pierre Azoulay et al. · Azoulay, Jones, Kim, Miranda (NBER Working Paper) Free Advanced
The honest counterpoint you should read before deciding. This large study finds that, on average, older founders have higher success rates in high-growth entrepreneurship, which is real and worth knowing. But it also tells you where that edge lives (deep-domain, capital-heavy, relationship-heavy markets), which is exactly where a student should not fake fit, and by contrast where your youth and lived proximity are the smarter bet.
- On average, older founders succeed more in high-growth startups.
- Their edge concentrates in domain-heavy and relationship-heavy markets.
- Use it to pick markets where your age helps, not where it hurts.
