The Design Sprint

Jake Knapp · GV (Google Ventures) Free Intermediate

GV's method for building a realistic facade and testing it with five target customers in a single week, which is the interview flavoured cousin of the fake door. Their fake it philosophy, a convincing front is all you need to learn, is the same principle as a landing page test applied face to face. Use it when you want qualitative reactions to a prototype alongside the quantitative click data.

  • A convincing facade is enough to test; you do not need the real thing
  • Five target customers surface most of the problems worth knowing
  • Compress research into a week so you decide fast, then move

It answers 3 questions

  1. How do I show a prototype to users without biasing their reaction?
  2. How do I run a landing-page / 'fake-door' test?
  3. How do I do user research when I'm building something nobody has seen before and can't describe what they want?
