Are the free online goal-planning calculators any good, or should I pay for a tool?

For most founders the free calculators are genuinely good enough to get started. India has solid free goal-based planning tools and calculators for retirement, a child's education, a home, or just how much to invest each month to reach a number. They force you to write down the goal, the timeframe, and a realistic savings rate, which is most of the value. Their limitation is the assumptions baked in: the return and inflation numbers you feed them are guesses, so treat the output as a direction, not a promise. Paid tools and a planner add more when your situation gets complex, like a concentrated equity position or a liquidity event, where the questions are less about arithmetic and more about judgement. Start free, get the plan on paper, and pay for help only when the decisions outgrow the calculator. Returns and inflation are never guaranteed, so revisit the numbers as things change.
