AI Gross Margin
Also called Gross Margin for AI Products
Gross margin for a product built on AI models, counting model and compute costs as part of the cost of delivering it. It often comes in well below traditional software, because every request costs compute.
Why it matters
Investors value a software company partly on its gross margin, so an AI product that looks like SaaS but carries heavy model costs is a different business. Founders improve it by sending simple requests to smaller models, reusing work that repeats, and pricing so that heavy users pay more.
For example
An AI writing tool earning ₹1 crore a month spends ₹40 lakh on model calls and hosting, a 60 percent gross margin, and works to raise it by moving most requests to a cheaper model.
