Selling remotely, by phone, email, and video, rather than in person. Field sales, the alternative, involves meeting customers face to face.
Why it matters
Inside sales is cheaper and more scalable than field sales, which is why most modern startups default to it. Field sales still wins for very large or relationship-heavy deals, so the mix depends on your buyer and deal size.

The whole sales team sells over video calls and email from one office, closing deals across the country without ever flying to meet a customer.
