Winner-Take-All

Also called Winner-Takes-All

A market where one or a few players end up capturing almost all the value, usually because of strong network effects or economies of scale that make the leader progressively harder to beat.

Why it matters

In winner-take-all markets, being first to scale can justify aggressive spending, since second place is worth little. But most markets are not actually winner-take-all, and wrongly assuming yours is leads to reckless burn.

For example

In ride-hailing, network effects push most riders and drivers to the biggest platform, so one or two players end up taking most of the market.
