Breaking into GTM

What does 'go to market' actually mean? People say GTM constantly and I still cannot define it.

GTM is the whole answer to one question: how does a stranger who has your problem end up paying you and staying. That covers who you sell to, what you say to them, how they first hear about you, who talks to them, what you charge and who keeps them after the sale. It is not a launch plan or a marketing campaign, those are pieces of it. The useful test is that you can draw your GTM on one page as a path a real customer walked, from first hearing your name to renewing. If you cannot draw it, you do not have a GTM yet, you have a set of activities.

Covers ICP definition, the PBC structure for running a sales call, pilot design and weekly forecasting in one place, with templates for the call scorecard and the forecast model. The most useful single page for a founder building their first process.

The Most Common Go-to-Market Questions This Expert Gets from Early Founders

From First Round Review by First Round Review with Emery Rosansky long read

  • Define ICP by operational signals, not size: for an onboarding tool, companies with 20+ open remote roles on LinkedIn.
  • Keep pilots under 90 days; if value takes six months to show, only run it as a paid pilot.
  • At ACVs of 10K dollars or less, margins look far healthier on a self-serve motion.
  • Run a monthly 90 minute forecast review plus 30 minutes a week on opportunity hygiene and close dates.

Kirani has backed Freshworks, Chargebee and BrowserStack, and his rule that the product stays horizontal while the GTM goes vertical is the most quoted line in Indian SaaS for good reason. Covers push versus pull markets, channel focus, first pricing and first hires in one piece.

How to Build a Clear and Actionable GTM Strategy

From SeedToScale (Accel India) by Shekhar Kirani ~15 min read

  • Keep the product horizontal but make the go-to-market vertical, and aim to get the first 100 customers fast.
  • Read search and keyword volume to tell a pull market from a push market: the pull model works well up to roughly 3 to 5 million dollars ARR.
  • CAC is the only real proof a channel works, so get one channel working before adding a second.
  • Per-user pricing beats a departmental licence early, and deep discounts for the first 100 customers are fine.
