Should my company put part of my salary into NPS?

Often yes, if you are on the payroll, because it is one of the few parts of a salary that still saves tax in the new regime. When your company pays into your NPS account as your employer, that contribution is deductible for you up to 14% of your basic pay plus dearness allowance in the new regime, and 10% in the old, within a ₹7.5 lakh a year ceiling on employer contributions to NPS, PF and superannuation together. The trade-off is the lock-in: NPS is retirement money with limited early withdrawals, so it suits money you will not need for decades, not your emergency fund or your runway. It also costs the company the same as paying you salary, so it reshapes pay you already take rather than adding cash. Set it up through your payroll under NPS's corporate model, and confirm the limits for the year with your CA.

Labour codes 2025: how the 50% wage rule resets salaries, tax and retirement savings

From Business Today by Basudha Das

  • Basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance must make up at least half of total pay; allowances above that are counted as wages.
  • A larger wage base raises PF and gratuity, which can lower monthly take-home pay.
  • Employer PF and NPS contributions are tax free up to ₹7.5 lakh a year combined.

Old vs new tax regime: calculator and comparison

From ClearTax by ClearTax

  • The new regime's rebate makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax free, and its standard deduction is ₹75,000 against ₹50,000 in the old.
  • The new regime drops 80C, 80D, HRA and interest on a self-occupied home loan; employer NPS contributions count in both.
  • The old regime wins only when deductions cross a break-even that rises with income.
