Your new venture is catching fire and you need to ramp up operations quickly to handle demand. Where should you look for pointers? Try McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s.

The Start-Up Genome Project analyzed thousands of high tech start-ups and found that successful companies progressed through four predictable phases. Dubbed the “Marmer Stages,” each involved a different set of objectives; Discovery was crafting and testing the idea, Validation was refining product features and generating initial orders, Efficiency was making customer acquisition and delivery processes repeatable, and Scale was ramping up and generating aggressive growth. A successful mantra was “nail it, then scale it”—confirming that the product, marketing strategy, and business model all worked before stepping on the gas with big capital, staff, and infrastructure investments.

So what happens when the time comes for a start-up to scale in a big way? Suddenly the game changes from “tinkering” to “ramping,” generating volume quickly to establish market position and cash flow. It may sound silly to high tech entrepreneurs, but fast food franchises offer unique insights—they’ve made scaling up a science.

To understand the science of scaling up, Headstart Ahmedabad presents "Scaling up the Franchise Business". Join us on 19th August at CIIE, IIM Ahmedabad for an insightful session.

The eChai Effect - In Their Words

"eChai isn’t just a startup community … it’s a mindset . eChai has been one of the most impactful communities in my entrepreneurial journey. It’s been a turning point . In a world where building something can often feel isolating, eChai gave me a sense of belonging. I’ve found mentors, collaborators, and friends here — people who genuinely want to see you succeed. It’s a space where ideas are challenged, actions are celebrated, and founders grow not just in scale, but in clarity and confidence. From late-night ideas to early-morning pitches, this community has quietly but powerfully shaped the way I build, think, and dream. I’ll always be grateful for the way eChai creates spaces where founders don’t just grow businesses — they grow together."

"For me, eChai is a second home. I've been associated with it since the early days, when it was already setting a different tone for how startup communities could work. As a traditional business owner entering the new-age D2C space, eChai supported me in every direction. Over the years, it became my window to the startup world — and also gave me lifelong friends who continue to show up, for business and beyond."

"I attended my first eChai event 3 yrs back, and no one knew me in the market. Over the next three years, eChai didn’t only help me with knowledge or networking, but it gave me an identity from being unknown to now being recognized by a group of inspirational entrepreneurs connected with eChai, who have been gracious enough to acknowledge me and Digipple."
