Reps will not update the CRM. How do I get clean data without becoming the data police?

The short answer

Chasing reps for updates never scales, and it makes you the person everyone avoids. Three things work better. First, cut the required fields down until updating a deal takes under a minute, because most CRM neglect is a design problem dressed up as a discipline problem. Second, make the CRM the only source for anything reps care about: if commissions, pipeline credit, and the forecast call all read from the record, the record gets updated without you asking. Third, capture what you can automatically (calls, emails, meetings, next steps) so the rep is confirming data rather than typing it. Keep escalation as a last resort and always route it through their manager, not you.
