How did Rocketlane build a community nine months before it had a product to sell?

Srikrishnan Ganesan ran roughly 120 cold outreach conversations and engaged 70 to 80 companies before Rocketlane was commercially available, and instead of sitting on that access he turned it into Preflight, a Slack community for onboarding, implementation and customer success professionals, with biweekly virtual events and a podcast. Preflight had 637 members in July 2021 and passed 1,200 later, which meant that on launch day Rocketlane looked bigger than it was and already knew its buyer. They fired the funding announcement and the Product Hunt launch on the same day, took number one Product of the Day, and converted 250 signups into 30 paying customers within two and a half months, with the first 30 averaging about 7,000 dollars ACV. Ad spend reached 10,000 dollars a month by August 2021. Later, moving upmarket, they deliberately dropped the inbound SEO playbook they had inherited from Freshworks and went outbound and in person.

Rocketlane: How it began, and where we are headed

From Rocketlane Blog by Srikrishnan Ganesan About 8 min read

  • The first Rocketlane code was written in late May 2020 and the core dev team was in place by July.
  • They ran a private beta with close to 15 customers before launching, then took Product Hunt's #1 Product of the Day.
  • The insight: half the projects on leading project management tools were customer-facing, and none were built for client delivery.
