How do I get honest answers when the person I'm interviewing is a friend or someone in my network?

A starting point

Friends want you to succeed, so they will soften everything, which is the opposite of what you need. As a starting point, frame the conversation around a problem, not your idea, and ask about specific things they did last month rather than what they think of your product. If you can, route around your inner circle entirely for the harshest signal, and treat any friend's praise as data you still have to verify with a stranger.
