Doing the work

I am the first GTM hire at a startup. What is my job really, and how do I not get fired in 12 months?

The short answer

Your job is not to relieve the founder of selling, it is to prove the founder's selling can be done by someone else. So spend the first month riding along and copying, not inventing. Close small deals early and visibly, even unimpressive ones, because your credibility comes from a signed contract far more than from a plan. Write down the playbook as you go and hand it back to the founder, that artefact is what makes you promotable rather than replaceable. About half of early first sales hires do not last a year, and most of the failures are people who tried to install a process from a bigger company on day one.
