Founder of Zoho, which sells to over 100 million users worldwide without venture funding or a heavy sales machine
Why they're worth your time
Zoho is the strongest working argument that price, product breadth and patience can substitute for a large sales and marketing budget. He is explicit about the tradeoffs: slower growth, no funding rounds to buy distribution, and a bet that owning the whole stack lets you undercut everyone permanently.
Background
Sridhar Vembu co-founded AdventNet in 1996, which became Zoho Corporation, and led it as CEO until stepping down in January 2025 to become Chief Scientist. Zoho took no external funding, built a very broad product suite, and prices deliberately below comparable Western software. He moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to rural Tamil Nadu in 2019 and runs R and D out of small towns including Tenkasi, and he writes and posts constantly about how and why the company is built this way.
