Google now answers with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Does my Google strategy change?

The short answer

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode pull from the same index and ranking systems as normal search, so the entry ticket is unchanged: crawlable, helpful, people-first content with no special AI markup. What changes is the payoff curve: clicks on informational queries have collapsed (up to a 58% CTR drop when an Overview shows), while clicks that do come through are higher intent. Aim to be the source the Overview cites, and shift effort toward bottom-of-funnel pages and non-commodity content AI cannot paraphrase away.
