What is the actual difference between positioning, messaging and copy? I keep being asked for all three and they feel like the same job.

Positioning is a decision, messaging is a small set of sentences that carry the decision, copy is the words on a specific page. Positioning answers who this is for, what they would use instead, and why you are better for those people. Messaging turns that into two or three claims you can actually prove and will repeat everywhere. Copy is those claims tuned for a homepage, a deck or a cold email, where tone and length matter. If you skip the first step, the other two are just rearranging furniture, which is why the fifth homepage rewrite still did not land.

An Introduction to Positioning

  • The category sets the expectations: the same features are judged differently as email than as chat.
  • It works like an opening scene in a film, telling the buyer where they are before anything else lands.
