Apple Intelligence groups a phone's notifications and summarises them. In December 2024 it summarised a run of BBC alerts as "Luigi Mangione shoots himself", which had not happened, and delivered it under the BBC's name and logo. The other two items in the same summary were accurate. Apple declined to comment at the time and later shipped an update that italicises machine-written summaries and lets a reader switch them off per app, and turned them off for news and entertainment apps entirely while it worked on them. The case is here because of who carried the error: the summary was Apple's, and the masthead on it was somebody else's.
