Someone set up a WhatsApp account using a public photograph of WPP's chief executive, used it to arrange a Microsoft Teams meeting, and ran the meeting with a voice clone of another senior executive over YouTube footage of them, typing in the chat window as Read himself while staying off camera. The target, an agency leader, was asked to set up a new business, and the attempt failed. Read wrote to WPP's leadership about it in May 2024 and the line above is from that message. Filed next to the Arup case because the two sit either side of the same threshold: one worked and one did not, and the difference was not the technology.
