Answers about the Puducherry startup scene
What does the startup ecosystem in Puducherry look like?
Small, and shaped differently from most Indian cities. Venture funded technology is close to absent, and the genuine entrepreneurial density sits in Auroville, where around 230 enterprises employ roughly 5,000 people making natural personal care, organic food, conscious clothing and appropriate technology. The town itself runs on tourism, JIPMER and Pondicherry University, and the PIPDIC pharma estates. The companies list above shows who is building what, filterable by vertical.
What is the Auroville enterprise cluster?
Auroville is an international township founded in 1968, about 10 km north of Puducherry and administratively inside Tamil Nadu's Viluppuram district, though it functions as part of the Puducherry economy. Its enterprises are cooperative units rather than venture backed startups, and several are decades old and export led. Maroma makes natural fragrance and body care, Upasana works in conscious clothing with handloom weavers, The Colours of Nature revived natural indigo fermentation dyeing, Mason & Co makes bean to bar chocolate, and MinVayu builds low cost open source wind turbines for low wind speeds. Profits from many of them go back into the township and into village livelihoods.
Where do founders and remote workers work from in Puducherry?
There is no large coworking market here. In the town a handful of independent spaces take desks, among them Seats and Space, 97Hub, L'espace and BondState, and in Auroville the Auromode Hive, set in a converted 1975 factory at Auroshilpam, offers dedicated desks, a shared kitchen and 24 hour access. A lot of work still happens from the French Quarter cafes, where the connection is slower than in the coworking spaces.
Which incubators and startup support exist in Puducherry?
The Atal Incubation Centre at the PEC Foundation, on the Puducherry Technological University campus at Pillaichavady, is the territory's main technology incubator. It is funded by the Atal Innovation Mission and works on electronics design and manufacturing, IoT and unmanned aircraft. Pondicherry University runs an MSME ASPIRE livelihood business incubator sanctioned in 2021, which is skilling and agriculture oriented rather than technology. Behind both sits the Aspiring Puducherry startup policy of 2019, with a 10 crore rupee corpus, a grant of up to 3 lakh rupees for incubator recommended projects and a monthly allowance of 10,000 rupees for up to five years.
Are there investors and VCs in Puducherry?
No resident fund was found in the union territory, and there is no local TiE chapter. Early capital reaches founders here through the state startup fund and the incubator grants, and otherwise from investors in Chennai, about 150 km up the coast, and Bengaluru. Hopsticks, a food and restaurant discovery app founded in 2018, raised an angel round of about 135,000 dollars and is the clearest example of an outside cheque landing here.
Where do founders meet in Puducherry?
At campus and government occasions more than at any standing founder network. The Puducherry Startup Expo, organised by the Atal Incubation Centre with the Department of Industries and Commerce, is the main annual gathering, and the entrepreneurship cells at Pondicherry University and Puducherry Technological University carry the year round activity. The other real gathering point is the remote worker scene, which meets informally in the French Quarter cafes and around the Auroville coworking spaces.
