Choosing what to sell I want to build a D2C brand but I haven't picked a product yet. How do I actually decide what to sell? Don't start from 'what's trending', start from the overlap of a real, repeat problem you understand, a customer you can reach affordably, and margins that survive shipping and ad costs. The best first product is boring enough to have proven demand but flawed enough (poor reviews, ugly options, missing sizes) that you can obviously do it better. Write your idea as a one-line problem statement before you fall in love with the product. 3 resources → Validating demand before inventory How many pre-orders or sign-ups actually prove people will pay, versus just being polite interest? Clicks and "interested" DMs are free to give and mean almost nothing - the real signal is money or a firm written commitment changing hands before you place a PO. As a rough bar, a landing-page-to-pre-order conversion above 3% (against paid traffic, not just friends-and-family) is a decent green light; under that, you're probably validating enthusiasm, not demand. Don't confuse a full Instagram DM inbox with a manufacturing-ready signal - ask for a ₹500-1,000 refundable deposit and watch how many people actually pay it. 4 resources → Finding manufacturers in India How do I actually find a manufacturer to make my product in India? Start with a one-page spec sheet so every factory quotes the same thing, then work three channels in parallel: B2B directories like IndiaMART and TradeIndia, referrals from other founders in your category, and a physical visit to the relevant manufacturing cluster. Don't judge a supplier on their website; judge them on how they answer your spec questions, how fast they reply, and whether they'll send a paid sample. The goal of round one is a shortlist of 3-5 real factories, not a signed deal. 5 resources → Choosing your store platform Shopify or WooCommerce for my first store in India? For a first D2C store in India, default to Shopify unless you already know WordPress cold or need heavy content/SEO customization from day one. Shopify hands you hosting, security, a UPI/Razorpay-ready checkout and support baked in, so you spend your first three months selling instead of patching plugins. WooCommerce looks cheaper on paper, but the 'free' plugin still needs paid hosting, security patching and a developer on call the moment something breaks - a real cost most first-time founders underprice. 4 resources → Your first 100 orders Where do my first 100 orders actually come from if I have no brand yet? Almost never ads - your first 100 orders come from your personal network, their network, and anyone who already trusts you (past colleagues, college WhatsApp groups, local community pages). Treat each of the first 100 as a relationship, not a transaction: message them personally, ask what almost stopped them from buying, and fix that before you spend a rupee on Meta. Indian founders who lean on personal outreach and word-of-mouth in month one consistently outpace those who go straight to paid. 3 resources → Meta ads fundamentals How do Meta (Facebook & Instagram) ads actually work? You don't buy an audience anymore, you enter an auction and let Meta's machine learning find the buyers for you. Every impression is auctioned in ~200ms on three things: your bid, how likely Meta thinks that person is to buy, and how much people like your ad, which is why a great creative on a low bid beats a boring ad on a high bid. In 2024-26 your creative IS your targeting, so obsess over the ad, not the interest checkboxes. 4 resources → Unit economics & contribution margin What is contribution margin for a D2C brand, and what do CM1, CM2 and CM3 mean? Contribution margin is what's left from an order after the costs that move when you sell one more unit; in Indian D2C the convention is to stack it in three layers. CM1 = net revenue minus COGS (your product margin), CM2 = CM1 minus fulfilment, shipping, payment fees and returns/RTO (your operating margin per order), and CM3 = CM2 minus marketing/ad spend (what actually contributes to fixed costs and profit). There is no self-serve 'upload your catalogue' button like on Amazon, every platform routes you through a category manager who decides if your SKU deserves shelf space, so getting a warm intro or a specialist to reach the right CM matters more than the form itself. Have your GSTIN, PAN, FSSAI/BIS licences, a registered trademark, EAN barcodes and compliant MRP labels ready before you apply, because missing docs are the single biggest reason onboarding drags to 6-8 weeks.
