A Talk on "Design and Pragmatism" by Matali Crasset
August 17, 2017
Thursday
Join us at NID as we welcome renound french designer Matali Crasset who, for the past decade, has been confronting social grounds through design!
Pragmatism is a philosophy that privileges experience and action, it is also a philosophy of invention and creativity.Designers, by their capacity to analyze uses and needs, are at the crossroads of several disciplines. They develop a global concept based on a personal and sensitive approach and are, as such, privileged interlocutors for the evolution of structures. Insofar as experimentation transforms the experimenter, modifies and enriches his perception of the world, he is able to intervene more finely on the real, without plating a predetermined and fixed doctrine.
The pluralistic view of pragmatism is opposed to the conceptions that reality is independent of the descriptions we give of it. There is therefore not a single true description of reality: pluralism envisages an open rationality. I would like to show here the diversity of materialization from the same theme, that of spaces for children, both from the point of view of architecture and from that of the specific pedagogical objects that have been developed.
The individual is not an atom separated from others: he is constituted in the social fabric, he contributes to the true individuality and its transformation by his action in return. It is therefore a question of inventing new logics to solve collective problems together.
