Global Fintech Fest 2026

Four days of Indian fintech, in the words of the people who were there

Curated on eChai, a day at a time.

Global Fintech Fest 2026 ran at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai from 8 to 11 September, the seventh edition, organised by the Payments Council of India, the Fintech Convergence Council and NPCI. The 8th was invitation-only.

Narendra Modi opened it and asked for four things: UPI's global footprint widened, fintech taken beyond payments into pensions and insurance, a Fintech Consumer Protection Index that does not yet exist, and agentic AI, tokenisation and quantum treated as the next frontier. The RBI Governor gave the welcome address and published the text.

Away from the stage the week had already started. People had been flying in since the weekend, side events were filling up faster than the sessions, booth numbers were going out, and NPCI's work on a protocol that would let AI agents pay had been reported two days early. One post noticed that crypto was not one of the three pillars, and the replies to it were the only real argument of the day.

On the 9th the exhibition hall opened and the week changed shape. Devendra Fadnavis brought the DELTA Act, a legal framework for tokenising land and other immovable assets, which is what Maharashtra committing at last year's GFF to become India's first tokenisation state has turned into. Everything else was announced on the floor: an agent that books a redBus seat and settles for it, PhonePe's first international market, cards issued at ATMs and cash paid into somebody else's account over Aadhaar, an agentic suite for merchants. Nearly every exhibitor called it their Day 1, because the conference had opened a day before the hall did.

This page is what people posted, in the order they posted it.

Wednesday 9 September. The exhibition opened, which is why nearly every company here is posting about their Day 1 on the fest's Day 2, and it is the day almost everything the week had to announce was announced.

From the stage

Wednesday's address was the Maharashtra Chief Minister's, and he came with something specific. Last year Maharashtra committed at GFF to becoming India's first tokenisation state; what that has turned into is the DELTA Act, a legal framework for tokenising land and other immovable assets.

#MCatGFF26 | 🚨 "Mumbai is one of the emerging Fintech capitals of the world."

“The future of finance has already started looking beyond New York, London and Singapore and is being built in India,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis (@Dev_Fadnavis ) said at Global Fintech Fest 2026.

Calling Mumbai one of the world’s emerging fintech capitals, Fadnavis said India’s fintech story has been defined by the democratisation of payments.

VIDEO | Mumbai: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis addresses Global Fintech Fest 2026, says, "Every year, when this extraordinary community gathers in Mumbai, we are reminded of something important. The future of finance has already started looking beyond New York, London, or Singapore. Increasingly, it is being imagined, built, and scaled here in India and there could be no better home for this conversation than Mumbai, the financial capital of India. And I believe one of the emerging Fintech capitals of the world. The theme of GFF this year is potential of impact. Built around three technologies that could fundamentally reshape finance. Agentic AI, tokenisation and quantum. I particularly like the words potential to impact because technology has never suffered from a shortage of potential. Our challenge is to convert that potential into impact for people. India has already demonstrated how this can be done."

The Chief Minister's own account of his address, and the only place the DELTA Act is named. The Maharashtra Digitisation and Exchange of Land Token Assets Act is what last year's commitment to make Maharashtra the first tokenisation state has become: a legal framework for putting land and other immovable assets on a blockchain. He names Kolhapur, Vidarbha and Pune, which is a longer way to say that none of this is Mumbai's alone.

    Devendra Fadnavis Devendra Fadnavis 5h

From Potential to Impact: Building the Future of Finance!

Glad to addresses the 'Global Fintech Fest 2026' on Potential to Impact: Agentic AI - Tokenisation - Quantum in Mumbai, today.

It was a pleasure to be back at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, the financial capital of India and an emerging fintech capital of the world. Agentic AI, Tokenisation and Quantum have the potential to fundamentally reshape finance. The real challenge is to turn this potential into meaningful impact for people.

India democratised payments through UPI. The next frontier is to democratise credit, investments, ownership and access to financial intelligence, so that an MSME in Kolhapur, a farmer in Vidarbha or a woman entrepreneur in Pune can benefit from the same quality of financial intelligence once available mainly to large institutions.

Last year, a commitment was made at the GFF to work towards making Maharashtra the first tokenisation state. Today, that vision is moving forward through the DELTA Act, the Maharashtra Digitisation and Exchange of Land Token Assets Act which aims to create a legal framework for blockchain-based tokenisation of land and other immovable assets. Maharashtra’s strength lies in the convergence of finance, technology, AI, data infrastructure and innovation. While Mumbai brings a deep financial ecosystem, Pune brings extraordinary technology and engineering talent, and Navi Mumbai is emerging as a new centre for data innovation and global connectivity.

With the vision and leadership of Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji, Maharashtra is building towards becoming India’s largest real-world test bed for the next generation of fintech. The next generation of fintech must democratise credit, intelligence, ownership and opportunity. We must aim for greater agency through agentic AI, productive capital through tokenisation, stronger trust through quantum and technology that ultimately expands human opportunity.

GFF 2026 Chair Kris Gopalakrishnan ji, NPCI Executive Director – Growth Sohini Rajola, former Executive Director of RBI, G Padmanabhan ji and other dignitaries were present.

What was said

Two television studios ran on the floor all day, and most of what came out of them records only that somebody was interviewed. These are the ones carrying something a person actually said.

Peak XV's own write-up of Mohit Bhatnagar's conversation with Razorpay's Harshil Mathur, and the fullest account anyone published of a Day 2 session. The third point is the one the rest of the week keeps returning to: that what Indian companies learned building for this scale is exportable to markets on the same journey.

Peak XV Partners Peak XV Partners 9h

What will the next generation of Indian fintech companies look like? More specialized. More personalized. And, increasingly, more global.

Fascinating conversation between @Razorpay's @harshilmathur and Peak XV’s @mobhat at @GffFintechfest today on building fintech companies from India for global scale.

    Things that stood out:

    • The next fintech wave goes beyond access. India’s first fintech era brought millions of consumers and businesses online. A deeper market now creates room to solve much more specific customer problems and still build at significant scale.

    • AI makes that depth possible. As the cost of personalization falls, founders can build products across languages, customer segments and use cases in ways that were previously too expensive or complex.

    • India’s fintech experience is increasingly exportable. With 49% of the world’s real-time payments happening here, Indian companies have had to solve for extraordinary scale and complexity. Those capabilities can become increasingly relevant in markets following a similar real-time payments journey.

There is still a huge amount to build in India. And an increasingly compelling opportunity to build from India for the world. 🙌
