I'm new to AI. Which assistant should I start with: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI or another?

Pick one general assistant and use it for two weeks on real errands before judging. ChatGPT is the widest: chat, images, voice and agents in one app, and the one most people already use (44% of US adults in Pew's 2026 survey). Claude is the careful writer, strong on long documents and analysis. Gemini suits you if you live in Gmail, Docs and Android. Copilot works inside Word and Excel, Meta AI inside WhatsApp, Perplexity answers with sources you can check, and Grok reads what people are posting on X. For low-stakes questions any free tier is fine. For real work, Ethan Mollick's July 2026 guide still points to ChatGPT or Claude.

Is the free version of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini enough, or should I pay?

For everyday questions, free is often enough. ChatGPT Free includes unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-6, Claude Free has memory, web search and voice, and the free Gemini app includes Deep Research and Gemini Live. What you run into are limits on uploads, images, voice, research and the thinking models. Pay when a limit stops you in the middle of real work, and buy one plan rather than three: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are $20 a month and Google AI Pro is $19.99. Cheaper steps are ChatGPT Go at $8, which may show ads, and Google AI Plus at $4.99. The $100-plus tiers mostly buy more hours of use, not smarter answers.

What do these AI plans cost in India, and are the free Jio and Airtel offers still running?

Google lists AI Plus at ₹399 a month in India, AI Pro at ₹1,950 and Ultra from ₹6,500. Microsoft 365 Personal, which puts Copilot in Word and Excel, is ₹689 a month or ₹6,899 a year, and Premium is ₹1,999 a month. ChatGPT bills in rupees: Go launched in India at ₹399 a month including GST, and checkout shows today's price. Claude lists dollars, $20 a month for Pro before tax, and Perplexity cannot yet take rupees for a recurring plan. Most free years have closed: ChatGPT Go's on 21 January 2026 and Airtel's Perplexity Pro on 16 January 2026. Jio's 18-month Google AI Pro offer is activated in the MyJio app, so check there whether your plan carries it.

Should I use more than one AI assistant, and can I move what one knows about me to another?

Many people do: a16z found that roughly 20% of weekly ChatGPT web users also use Gemini in the same week. A sensible pattern is one assistant you use every day and a free second one for checking: when an answer matters, ask the other the same question and look at where they disagree. Pay for two only if each does a job the other cannot, such as Gemini inside your Google apps and ChatGPT for images and voice. Moving is easier than it was. You can ask ChatGPT or Claude what it remembers about you, and Claude has a built-in import that turns that list into its own memories. Read the list first and cut anything you would rather not carry over.

How do I choose between a fast model and a thinking model inside ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Use the fast setting for everyday questions and switch up when the task needs working out, such as a plan with trade-offs or a long document. In ChatGPT, the model menu has a Thinking slider (Instant, Medium, High, Extra High, plus Pro on Pro plans), and since September 2026 Plus and Pro no longer switch to thinking on their own, so choose it yourself. Free and Go users get a Think option. In Claude, the menu next to Send sets the model and an effort level from Low to Max; more effort is more thorough but slower and uses your limits faster. In Gemini, the free app runs a Flash-Lite model and Google AI Pro adds Gemini 4 Argon and Google's Pro model.

How do I get ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to remember me, my work and how I like answers?

Three settings do different jobs. Custom instructions are standing rules for every chat: who you are, how long answers should be, which language to reply in. In ChatGPT they sit under Settings, Personalization (1,500 characters on Free and Go, 5,000 on paid plans), in Claude under Settings, Your Claude, and Gemini has its own instructions setting. Memory is what the assistant picks up from past chats, and all three let you review it and correct it. Projects keep the chats, files and instructions for one piece of work together, such as a house move or an exam; Claude's free plan allows five. Use a temporary or incognito chat for anything you do not want remembered.

Is voice mode worth using, and which AI phone app is best for talking to?

Voice is the easiest way in if typing is slow, your hands are busy or you think better aloud. ChatGPT's Live voice listens and speaks at the same time, so you can interrupt it, and it can search the web and use memory; Go and Plus include 3 hours in any 24, and in October 2026 OpenAI added a Hindi voice. Gemini Live is part of the free Gemini app, but only on the phone, not the web. Claude's voice mode is on every plan and works best from the phone app. Check anything that depends on a date, a time or a place, which OpenAI says voice can get wrong, and, as Google's own help asks, get people's permission before you record them.

Is the AI already inside WhatsApp or Microsoft Office good enough, or do I need a separate app?

For quick questions it can be. Meta AI is free inside WhatsApp: open it from the Chats tab or forward a message to it, and the Meta AI app's Thinking mode now runs Meta's Muse Spark 1.1. Copilot has a free version, and with Microsoft 365 it works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, from ₹689 a month in India. Google AI Pro does the same for Gmail and Docs. These are widely used: Pew found 17% of US adults use Copilot and 14% Meta AI. The limit is depth. Ethan Mollick finds Copilot fine for office documents but well behind on agents, so for long writing or research a dedicated assistant does more.
