Jatin Chaudhary

Where eChai's founders meet in Ahmedabad, as Jatin Chaudhary walks it: the campus where eChai's founders met, the coffee stops, the clubs, the offices, incubators and fund that host, the grounds on a Wednesday, the courts, the stands at a match, the riverfront and the old city on foot.

  1. Home in Vastrapur
    Home in Vastrapur Home, and where the day starts.

    This is home, in Vastrapur, and every day on this map starts and ends here. Upri Manzil is across the road, Hop Cafe is a short drive, and the Gujarat University Tennis Centre is a kilometre away. The rest of the walk is where my day goes in between.

  2. Nirma University
    Nirma University The campus where Kunal and I met, over cricket.

    Nirma University is where Kunal, my co-founder at eChai, and I met. We were in the same batch in engineering, in different classes, and it was cricket that brought us together; cricket has been part of the eChai story ever since, and on this walk it is still Wednesday night. I was 01IT010 in the 01 IT class, and I spent more time in the NIM library than in my classes. We regularly host eChai at Nirma now, so the campus where it started is still one I come back to.

  3. Upri Manzil
    Upri Manzil The rooftop opposite home.

    Upri Manzil is the rooftop directly opposite home. When a founder is in Vastrapur in the evening and the plan is only to sit and talk, this is where I say to come, because I walk across the road to it. Most evenings here are two or three of us and no agenda.

  4. Hop Cafe
    Hop Cafe The coffee stop.

    Hop Cafe at the DoubleTree is where I take my meetings, and it has been the answer to where we should meet for long enough that most founders in the city who have met me once have met me here. A founder from another city with a few hours in Ahmedabad is usually met here first, before the evening moves to wherever the group is that day.

  5. Basil The OtherSide
    Basil The OtherSide Coffee on the north side of the city.

    Basil is on the north side of the city, in the Gota region, and we come here with Dr Amit Gupta of Airmed Pathology Labs. Amit is on this side of the city, so when the group is meeting Amit it meets at Basil. Amit is also a member at Belvedere, which is further along this walk.

  6. YMCA Club
    YMCA Club The club on SG Highway, for socials and Soundboards.

    Monday evenings are at the YMCA Club on SG Highway. Nadeem Jafri of Hearty Mart is a member and brings the group in every week, so this is the fixed point of the week: a founder in town on a Monday knows where the rest of us are. Some of the eChai socials and Soundboards have been held here too, in the same rooms we sit in on a Monday.

  7. Karnavati Club
    Karnavati Club The club in Prahlad Nagar, for the larger evenings.

    Manasvi Thapar of Candour Legal is a friend and is part of the leadership at Karnavati Club in Prahlad Nagar. Karnavati is where we bring a larger group when an evening needs more room than a cafe, and Manasvi makes the arrangements.

  8. Rajpath Club
    Rajpath Club The club opposite Shapath, on a weeknight.

    Shrijay Sheth of LegalWiz is a member at Rajpath Club, opposite Shapath in Bodakdev, and brings us here once a week. With Nadeem Jafri of Hearty Mart at the YMCA on a Monday and Shrijay here later in the week, two evenings of our week are settled by which friend is a member where.

  9. KBG Club
    KBG Club One of the clubs on the round.

    Shalin (Shawn) Parikh of MYCPE One has a villa at KBG Club, and Shalin has us over there, along with other founders from eChai. It is the one stop on our club round that is somebody's home rather than a club floor. Shalin's office, the MYCPE One headquarters on CG Road, is further along this walk.

  10. Belvedere Golf & Country Club
    Belvedere Golf & Country Club One more club, out at Shantigram.

    Belvedere Golf & Country Club is out at Shantigram, and Dr Amit Gupta of Airmed Pathology Labs is a member here, the same Amit who takes the group to Basil. It is the furthest of the clubs from home, and we come out here when Amit is hosting. The group on those evenings is the same one that was at the YMCA on the Monday.

  11. DevX
    DevX DevX's first space in the city.

    This is where DevX started. Umesh Uttamchandani, who co-founded DevX, is a friend, and we have hosted eChai meetups at DevX spaces in every city DevX has opened in. This building is where that arrangement began, and DevX Capital One, the next stop on this walk, is its newest space in the city.

  12. DevX Capital One

    DevX Capital One is the newest of the DevX spaces in the city. It is where we hold the smaller socials, and when founders from other cities are in Ahmedabad, this is where we bring the local group together to meet them. Umesh Uttamchandani of DevX, whose first space is the stop before this one, makes the room available.

  13. Upsquare Technologies
    Upsquare Technologies Upsquare's office, the same block as House of Starts.

    Utpal Vaishnav founded Upsquare, and the Upsquare office is where we hold the smaller AI Soundboards, the ones with a dozen founders around one table rather than an audience in rows. Utpal sits in on them. Our other run of Soundboards is at Rushabh Shah's office at STIR Advisors, further along this walk.

  14. CheckMyWarranty
    CheckMyWarranty Zestard's HQ, one of the partner brand offices we meet at.

    This is the Zestard office, Anuj Dalal's company, and it looks out over ITC Narmada. We bring the founders of eChai's partner brands together regularly, each time at a different partner brand's office, and Zestard is one of them, with Anuj as host.   15. MYCPE One
    MYCPE One An eChai partner brand's office, on CG Road.

    Shalin (Shawn) Parikh founded MYCPE One, and this building on CG Road is the company's global headquarters, opened recently. We hold a good number of the eChai socials in the city with MYCPE One, here, and Shalin is the same Shalin who has us over at KBG Club.

  16. Because
    Because An eChai partner brand's studio, on the north side near Zero Point.

    Aditya Shah and Deenky Shah co-founded Because, and the Because studio is out at Shantigram, near Zero Point, looking out over the city. We hold socials here with Because as the host, and Aditya and Deenky are in the room for them. Because is one of eChai's partner brands, and the partner brands' offices are where most of the socials on this walk happen.

  17. LegalWiz.in
    LegalWiz.in An eChai partner brand's office, near Nehru Nagar Cross Roads.

    Shrijay Sheth founded LegalWiz, and the office near Nehru Nagar Cross Roads is where our late socials happen, the ones that begin after the working day and run on. Shrijay is the same Shrijay who brings us to Rajpath Club every week, so most weeks we are with Shrijay twice, once at the club and once here.

  18. STIR Advisors
    STIR Advisors A regular stop on the round, opposite Rajpath Club.

    Rushabh Shah is the managing partner at STIR Advisors, and we hold the AI Soundboards here regularly, with Rushabh hosting. Rushabh recently set the office up directly opposite Rajpath Club, so a Soundboard here and our club evening with Shrijay Sheth of LegalWiz are across one road from each other.

  19. IIMA Ventures IIMA Ventures
    IIMA Ventures The incubator on the IIM Ahmedabad new campus, where founders get discovered.

    IIMA Ventures is the incubator on the IIM Ahmedabad new campus, known earlier as CIIE.CO, and we have been hosting eChai events here for many years. For a lot of startup founders these evenings have become the launchpad, where they first get discovered by the rest of the city's startup ecosystem.

    GVFL Thursday evenings, on the venture fund's own floor.

    GVFL is a venture fund, and its office on the 12th floor at Venus Grounds in Nehru Nagar is where we hold the eChai meetup on a Thursday evening: strategies shared before they are polished, and tools taken apart before they trend.

    i-Hub Gujarat Every week, the Ahmedabad ecosystem in one place.

    i-Hub Gujarat, on the KCG campus opposite PRL, is where we bring the Ahmedabad startup ecosystem together every week. It is also where we host Ahmedabad Startup Day, the larger gathering of the city's founders.

  22. VentureStudio (Center for Innovative Business Design) VentureStudio (Center for Innovative Business Design)
    VentureStudio (Center for Innovative Business Design) Ahmedabad University's incubator, and the #CoRise wall.

    VentureStudio is Ahmedabad University's incubator, off Commerce Six Roads, and our weekly forum met here on Thursday evenings: founders presented their ventures, and then the room worked out how each of us could help, with feedback, an introduction or a word about them online. The first picture is the #CoRise wall at VentureStudio, covered in notes. We still hold panels here, and I hosted the one on fundraising, with Sushil Agrawal of Saarthi Pedagogy and Rishit Shah of Kinetiq on it.

    iCreate Wednesday evenings, the Sales & Marketing Forum.

    iCreate's office, on the first floor of the GMDC building near Helmet Circle, is where we ran the eChai Sales & Marketing Forum on Wednesday evenings, for the people selling and marketing across the city's companies to share what was working. Hubilo came out of iCreate: Vaibhav Jain, who co-founded Hubilo, told us its first client was iCreate itself, when Hubilo ran the event technology for iCreate's WhatNext in 2015.

  24. MICA MICA
    MICA Demo Days on the MICA campus at Shela.

    MICA's campus near Shela is where we have held eChai Demo Days, some of them with MICA's own incubator: founders presenting what they are building to students, mentors and investors. The picture with everyone on the floor is a Demo Day with MICA Incubator, and the other is the Mani Iyer Auditorium.

    House of MG The heritage hotel where the founders' dinners happen.

    House of MG in Lal Darwaja is where the eChai founders' dinners are held. It is also where I bring my own friends, and the first place I take anyone visiting Ahmedabad. Of every place on this walk it is the one I have hosted at most often.

    Wednesday night is cricket. A group of us founders plays every week, mostly here at Fireball Box Cricket and now and then at Googly Box Cricket instead. It is the one evening of our week with a fixed game rather than a fixed table, and the people on the pitch are the same ones who were at the YMCA on Monday.

    Milan Farm, off the ring road at Ognaj, is where we play ground cricket rather than box cricket, for the eChai Startup Cricket Championship: a tennis ball, twelve overs a side, on Thursday evenings, and every player from the startup side of the city, drafted by the team owners from eChai members rather than signed up from outside.

    Pickle Rush, behind Arose Foods on Karnavati Club Road, is where we ran the weekly eChai Startup Pickleball Night: a fee to play, and free for anyone who only wanted to watch and meet the founders at the side of the court. It is a few steps from Googly Box Cricket, where the Wednesday cricket goes now and then, and it came before the padel we now play at Shaishya Pulse Arena.

It holds regular tournaments, and from time to time players of a serious standard come through, so when there is tennis on I go, and the founders who follow the game come along. It is the first of the stops on this walk where the sport is watched rather than played.

This is where the group goes to watch sport at the moment, and we go the way we go everywhere else on this walk, as a group of founders.

    The Sabarmati Riverfront at Paldi is where I take friends who are in Ahmedabad for the first time, for a boat ride on the river. When the boats are not running we take the scooters along the walkway instead. House of MG, the other place on this walk I take a visitor, is a short drive from here.

    Our Ahmedabad Founders Walk, Heritage Edition, starts here at the Swaminarayan temple in Kalupur. The route is the city's own Mandir to Masjid walk: from this temple, through the pols of the old city, to the Jama Masjid. We walk it together as a group of founders, and it is the one stop on this map where we are on foot rather than at a table or in a stand.
